John was a great guy. We had alot of laughs together during our high school years.  Man of Christ.  The obituary pretty much sums it up.  I know his family, friends and Heights mates are sad but he is reuntied with his mom and dad who were the best.  Will miss your contagious spirit.

John was truely a great guy.  Strong yet compassionate with a disarming sense of humor that made everyone who knew him glad to be around him.  I think he made all of us want to be a better person.  God bless you John, you will be dearly missed.

John was a fine friend and loyal, charismatic schoolmate and football teamate at Heights. We met at a young age, as our fathers worked together. I got to know his parents, who were wonderful, loving people. John was a fine athlete like his father, Lindy, an All American at TCU in the 50's. John blocked "larger than his size", and with Houston Kaufman, Bill Clemons, Rob Wall and others, opened many a gaping hole for Mark Julian, Bobby Smith, Bobby Spencer, and I. One night on the team bus, after a big football victory, our talented, hard nosed, taskmaster coach, Merlin Priddy, said "Berry, sing us one of your songs". John sang Elvis's, 'Ain't Nothing but a Hound Dog" and Blue Suede shoes ", plus a couple of others. That bus was really rockin. I always felt like he was one of those friends we could call anytime, if we had a need, and he would help. I believe our lives were all better, because of John. Prayers to his family.

Sincerely,

Mack Mercer and Patty Furey Ball Mercer

Mack, that is a great story.  That reminded me of the parallels between you and John and both of your father's great atletic abilities.  I knew John better in elementary and middle school and have memories of playing football in his backyard in Ridgmar. I remember the Pumphreys being there as well.  We would still visit in the hallways in high school.  He was incredibly nice.  I did not know that he had cancer.  (If any of our AHHS classmates reading this ever has a cancer related question feel free to give me an email.  If I do not know the answer I have some good resources.)  Somehow I can just see just visualize John singing, "YOU CAN DO ANYTHING YOU WANT BUT JUST STAY OFF MY BLUE SUEDE SHOES!'  What a memory!  Thanks, Mack.

Shannon Cox,

Thanks for sharing nice memories of John Berry, as well as our families, and I hope you and your family are well.

As a survivor of Hodgekins back in the 90's, I'm usually curious of what cancers afflict our classmates.  If anyone wants to share more information about John, I'd be curious.

Mack Mercer

Hello all you old friends,

I do not keep up but I saw this notice of John Berry and my heart just was saddened to think of the passing of John Berry.  He will be forever 16 for me!  As are most of you fellow Yellow Jackets!  He was just a fun, sweet, kind guy who always made me smile with his twinkle in his eye.  We were not close friends but so enjoyed his company!  Wishing everyone so much joy and wellness!!  With love!!

John was just a great guy, always suporting whatever was going on. As we all know he was also quite the character as many have mentioned. No one could get the baseball bleachers rockin' like John could when he would  bust out in some Elvis song when things would get a little slow, and he'd have everybody dancin' and clapping, great memories. He was one of the good guys and he will be missed. God Speed John and prayers for your family.

John was a dear friend going back to Drury Lane and ML Phillips.  He was upbeat, energetic, and so well connected to others.  He could step from that old pick-up and transform into Phil Alpha, but had the grit to be a truly small guard in the football trenches.  He loved playing and being a key part of the team, never showing any sign of the potential shadow of being the son of an All-American father.  While such a vibrant part of the mix, he had the fortitude to go his own way and follow his own path.  It is sad to think of his passing, but comforting that he is free of suffering now and so well remembered by his peers from long ago.  Roll on John.
